hi: Who knows the relation of Longhorn to Vista? Vista is home edition name? Longhorn is server edition name?

Longhorn is Windows Vista, Microsoft's next OS. It started out code named Longhorn, but early in the beta Microsoft announced the OS would be called Windows Vista when released.

Not quite right. As Nancy says, Longhorn is the code name for the OS next generation. Vista is

the name Microsft gave the desktop version (home, pro and whatever). The server version is, as yet, unnamed and is still called Longhorn Server.

When a Microsoft operating system is under development, it is internally given a code name, before Marketing comes decides on the actual name it will be sold as. Those names usually become widely known in the field. So "Longhorn" is the internal name code name for the product that will be called "Vista" when it was released.
Similary, Chicago became Windows 95, Memphis became Windows 98, and Whistler became Windows XP.

Oh, yeah, I wasn't thinking about the server side, since I don't know that part. Kind of ridiculous to use a server with two desktops and a lappy. :-}
But, somewhere back in the dim reaches of my brain, I remember that Longhorn Server isn't called Vista.

Nancy; That is probably the best and most accurate description. As many other MVPs, I know a lot of MVPs, none of which set becoming an MVP as a goal.
To put another way: Working with the goal of becoming a MVP is more difficult than any certification. Earning the MVP award can be the easiest thing ever accomplished. Seemingly contradictory but yet very true statements.

Never in my wildest dreams did I envision becoming an MVP. I just did my best, tried to help when and where I could, and played a lot. Sometimes you gotta play just to loosen up the tension. If I'd been working to become an MVP, I would probably have bungled it big time.

Microsoft gives the operating systems it is working on (as well as other software projects) code names by which they refer to them. Later, when they've decided upon a name under which the operating system (or other product) is to be marketed, the code name is dropped for the market name.

The OP was kind of correct. Vista is the name of the client. The server version is still referred to as Longhorn since the final name has not yet been determined.
Currently if you say Vista, you are referring to the client and not the Server. If you say Longhorn, it is assumed you are referring to the Server since that is the way Microsoft distinguishes the two.
